Himalayan Kingdoms, Sacred Monasteries & Hidden Valleys

A journey through the Eastern Himalayas — from the Buddhist monasteries of Sikkim and the tea gardens of Darjeeling to the peaceful Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan.

This route combines mountain landscapes, sacred monasteries, colonial heritage, Himalayan culture and the spiritual atmosphere of Bhutan.

Itinerary:

Day 1. Bagdogra Airport – Gangtok
Approx. 125 km | 5 hrs drive Arrival at Bagdogra Airport and scenic drive towards Gangtok through forests, mountain rivers and Himalayan foothills. GANGTOK Located at an altitude of 1,750 meters, Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim and one of the most beautiful Himalayan towns of India. Surrounded by monasteries, orchids and mountain landscapes, Gangtok offers a unique blend of Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan culture. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2. Gangtok Sightseeing
After breakfast proceed for full-day sightseeing in Gangtok. Visit: Rumtek Monastery Do Drul Chorten Namgyal Institute of Tibetology Enchey Monastery Directorate of Handloom & Handicrafts RUMTEK MONASTERY One of the most important monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism and the seat of the Karmapa lineage. Famous for its sacred relics, golden stupa and peaceful atmosphere. NAMGYAL INSTITUTE OF TIBETOLOGY One of the world’s most important centers for Tibetan Buddhist research and manuscripts. ENCHEY MONASTERY A peaceful monastery located above Gangtok with panoramic Himalayan views. HANDICRAFTS CENTRE Traditional carpets, wood carving, bamboo work and local Himalayan handicrafts. Overnight at hotel.
Day 3. Gangtok – Darjeeling
Approx. 98 km | 4 hrs drive After breakfast drive to Darjeeling. DARJEELING Known as the “Queen of the Hills”, Darjeeling is famous for tea plantations, colonial atmosphere and breathtaking Himalayan panoramas dominated by Mount Kanchenjunga. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4. Darjeeling Sightseeing
Early morning excursion to Tiger Hill for sunrise. TIGER HILL One of the most spectacular sunrise points in the Himalayas with panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest. After breakfast enjoy the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train ride (subject to operation and seat availability). TOY TRAIN The historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers one of the world’s most scenic mountain train journeys. GHOOM MONASTERY Historic monastery founded in 1875 housing a magnificent statue of Maitreya Buddha. Afternoon city tour: Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre Overnight at hotel.
Day 5. Darjeeling – Phuentsholing
Approx. 195 km | 6–7 hrs drive Drive towards the Bhutan border. Arrival in Phuentsholing, immigration formalities and hotel check-in. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 6. Phuentsholing – Thimphu
Approx. 150 km | 4–5 hrs drive After breakfast drive to Thimphu — the capital city of Bhutan. Scenic Highlights Along the Route: Himalayan forests Mountain waterfalls Chortens & monasteries Traditional Bhutanese villages Arrival in Thimphu and check-in at hotel. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 7. Thimphu Sightseeing – Punakha
Morning sightseeing in Thimphu. Visit: Buddha Dordenma (Big Buddha) Royal Takin Preserve Zilukha Nunnery Tashichho Dzong Viewpoint Pangrizampa Temple Craft Bazaar BUDDHA DORDENMA One of the largest Buddha statues in the world overlooking the Thimphu Valley. Later drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass. DOCHULA PASS A spectacular Himalayan pass decorated with 108 memorial stupas and panoramic mountain views. Dinner and overnight in Punakha.
Day 8. Punakha – Paro
Morning sightseeing in Punakha. Visit: Punakha Dzong Suspension Bridge Chimi Lhakhang PUNAKHA DZONG One of Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress monasteries located at the confluence of two rivers. Later drive to Paro. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 9. Paro – Tiger’s Nest Monastery
Excursion to the legendary Taktsang Monastery. TIGER’S NEST MONASTERY One of the most sacred monasteries in the Himalayas dramatically perched on a cliff at 3,120 meters altitude. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava meditated here in the 8th century. Hiking Details: Hiking Distance: approx. 6.4 km Hiking Duration: 5–8 hrs depending on pace Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 10. Departure from Paro
