Matho Nagrang is one of the most mystical Buddhist festivals of Ladakh. During these days, Matho Monastery transforms into a place of power, prophecy, and ancient spiritual rituals.
The festival is held once a year — on the 14th–15th day of the first month of the Tibetan lunar calendar (February / March).
The main highlight of the celebration is the appearance of the oracles (Rongtsans). Two monks, after two months of meditation, isolation, fasting, and intense spiritual preparation, enter a trance state and become mediums of protective deities.
During the festival, they predict the future of the valley’s residents, give guidance on harvest, health, weather, and protection from misfortune. They perform acts perceived as supernatural — walking along narrow ledges, running across rooftops, holding swords while blindfolded. Their words are considered sacred and prophetic.
An essential part of the festival is the Cham masked dances. Monks dressed as protective deities perform sacred ritual dances accompanied by ceremonial horns, drums, cymbals, and chanting. The festival is not a performance, but a living spiritual tradition.

Ladakh is located at high altitude (3,000–4,500 meters above sea level). The first day
is always reserved for rest and gentle acclimatization. A slow and mindful start
ensures a comfortable adaptation.
Mountain weather can change quickly. Sunny days may feel warm, while evenings
and mornings are cool. Layered clothing, a light down jacket, sunglasses, and SPF
protection are recommended.
Journeys pass through high mountain passes and scenic valleys. Roads are part of the
adventure, offering breathtaking landscapes. Travel times may vary depending on
weather and road conditions.
No special training is required; however, the program includes walking on uneven
terrain, monastery steps, and natural trails. The pace is always adjusted to the group.
Festival dates are fixed, but the exact timing of rituals is determined by the monastery.
These are authentic spiritual events, not staged performances.
Mobile signal and internet access may be limited in remote valleys. This is a rare
opportunity to disconnect and fully experience the silence and vastness of the
Himalayas.
Weather and mountain conditions may occasionally require minor adjustments to the
itinerary. The integrity and depth of the experience are always preserved.
