Havelis, Forts, Desert Cities & Royal Heritage

Overview:

This journey is designed for travellers who want to discover Rajasthan through its painted havelis, royal forts, desert cities, sacred towns, lake palaces and atmospheric heritage stays.

The route begins with the fresco-painted mansions of Shekhawati, continues through the desert grandeur of Bikaner and Jaisalmer, the blue lanes of Jodhpur, the romantic lakes of Udaipur, the medieval charm of Bundi, the sacred atmosphere of Pushkar and the royal splendour of Jaipur.

Itinerary:

Day 1. Delhi – Mandawa

Distance: 260 km | Driving time: 5–6 hrs

Drive from Delhi to Mandawa, one of the most atmospheric towns of the Shekhawati region. Mandawa is often called the open-air art gallery of Rajasthan because of its fresco-painted havelis, old merchant houses and narrow heritage streets.

    Once a noble residence, Mandawa Fort reflects the royal and merchant history of Shekhawati through courtyards, balconies, wall paintings and traditional Rajasthani architecture.

    These havelis were built by wealthy trading families and decorated with colourful frescoes showing gods, royal scenes, daily life, animals, floral ornaments and early images of trains and cars.
  • Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli — classic Shekhawati art
    This haveli is known for its beautiful frescoes and traditional merchant-house architecture, giving a clear impression of Shekhawati’s artistic taste and prosperity.
  • Murmuria Haveli — unusual fresco stories
    One of Mandawa’s most interesting painted mansions, where mythological themes appear together with unusual images from modern life.

Day 2. Mandawa & Shekhawati Villages

Full day exploring Mandawa and nearby Shekhawati villages. This region was once home to wealthy trading families who decorated their mansions with colourful frescoes, mythological scenes, royal portraits and images from daily life.

Day 3. Mandawa – Bikaner

Drive to Bikaner, a powerful desert city with a strong royal past. Bikaner is known for its forts, red sandstone havelis, camel traditions, old bazaars and aristocratic desert atmosphere.

Day 4. Bikaner

A full day in Bikaner to explore its temples, desert traditions and merchant heritage.

Day 5. SBikaner – Jaisalmer

Distance: 330 km | Driving time: 6 hrs

Drive through desert landscapes towards Jaisalmer, the Golden City of Rajasthan. Built from yellow sandstone, Jaisalmer glows beautifully in the sun and feels like a living desert fortress.

Day 7. Jaisalmer – Jodhpur

Distance: 285 km | Driving time: 5 hrs

Drive to Jodhpur, the famous Blue City of Rajasthan. Its old quarter, painted in shades of blue, spreads below the mighty Mehrangarh Fort and creates one of the most iconic views in India.

Day 9. Jodhpur – Udaipur via Ranakpur

Drive to Udaipur, visiting Ranakpur Jain Temple en route. This is one of the most scenic parts of the itinerary, as the landscapes gradually change from desert plains to the softer hills of southern Rajasthan.
